Wildlife is an early morning or evening event, even then, nothing new and not much variety. I did come across some adorable muscovy ducklings when I stopped for gas near a retention pond. People give me the strangest looks as I wander off with my camera – I can’t help it if I my eye fixates and I must follow!
The days weave their paths into each other and I am just a drone to my slacker brain and the screen of the computer monitor.
I wonder and marvel at how “A types” operate. I spoke with Kim Nelson today when I stopped to pick up the two pieces I had at an exhibit where she works. Kim is head coordinator at the Museum of Seminole County History while also teaching Humanities at Seminole State College and writing a novel. She pulls total triple duty and is cool as a cucumber in her total ability to handle her priorities and have everything mapped out. I do believe it must be genetically engineered. I try and juggle and my balls are always on the ground all over.
She told me that during her last trip to Italy she found her family over there had a detailed geneology mapped back to the mid 1500’s — now that is a sign of great record keeping skills her family has passed down. Her novel is a work of fiction based upon her family, I have no doubt it will be a terrific read when she is finished. She inspired me to get excited about writing again, but only till I got back home and sat in front of a blank page that read, “add new” after I hit my abbesworld dashboard . I have a novel I gave up finishing it over ten years ago. Even with my writing group, once I found photography, it seemed so much easier as my eye and brain could coordinate and compute their efforts in silence without coaxing words from the brain. It didn’t require adjectives to describe taking photos. People could bring their own thought when observing thus sparing me the words on paper. When writing constructively via short story, poetry, etc., my brain must blast out cohesive thoughts and the gears need to be grinding and that is too much thinking in details, the stuff I dread anymore. Maybe because I am not sure if I come across well in my writing vision, but with photography, when I have an exhibit, my work speaks for itself – I like that! People really are not afraid to tell you how they feel, and you can read faces from across a room that makes me feel like I have accomplished something. I guess I am doubting my creative flow and its’ results. For now, I have left some of my writing in the hands, or rather paws of my beat poet cat alter ego,
cool Ringo, my “Cat Kerouac”

Oh don’t mind my cussing, it’s just between the heat, two computers, 5+ blogs and one digital camera, lack of sleep, politics, getting ready for photo exhibits, and looking for nature to enjoy, my brain is melting.

I came back from Tampa yesterday as we thought our new grandchild was coming sooner rather than later, but after all doctors reports and tests, she will be coming on her own terms, not to a timespan set by the doctor for his surgical convenience. So figured I actually had a bit more time in between and thought I would spend time here and get things in order and today I was rewarded as I drove to run errands and saw a fox squirrel running on the golf course. I drove home as fast as I could seeing I didn’t have a camera. I hoped that fox squirrel would be roaming nearby for a few minutes and I was right. Though when I got on the Mayfair Golf course, the rodent kept running away! First I looked left and right to make sure I wasn’t going to be “whacked” by some golfer! But it had been raining and was still thundering so the place was empty.
Walking toward the animal was like trying to catch your cat who only lets you get so close and then runs off about twenty feet further just to tease you as you approach. Here’s the pics, I was lucky that there was a second one not far from the first and he let me have some photo access at a distance.
Leaping away, I had to hurry, luckily a guy in a golf cart gave me a lift.
I wondered how close I could get before I could get a good shot.
Closer and closer…
The darker one was not quite as jumpy as the first. What a handsome face and coloring he had.
I love seeing them.
At home all was hot and quiet, the birds were just not very busy at all. The woodpecker is still busy feeding his brood.
Had one crow come visit this morning and of course, the young jays.
Oh, it’s good to be home again….
This looks like a polished piece of porcelain with hairs sticking wayward, but it is a close up of an Alaskan King crab claw. That was dinner last night, (not mine, I ate shrimp and they were ‘shrimpy’ in comparison with the width of that leg!) But, when I saw the cracked claws, I had to take some close ups, the hair was just too bizarre! The orange was such a pretty color.
Outside it is like a blast furnace and everywhere I go, I notice the mockingbirds chasing everything out of their way. I did happen to get a few of the crow sitting on one of my cut off trees getting ‘buzzed’ at by the mockingbird. Here’s the story in pics:
the crow retreats to tree stump, he looks out at the oncoming vengeance of two mockingbirds.
They swoop down and fake attack that stubborn crow,
The crow took off,
heading
right in my direction and then veering off. The crows and mockingbirds can be seen all over as the ‘mockers’ love to dive bomb the crows. The crows just go about their business looking overhead all the time. Here’s some crow pics:
My cranes were here on and off all afternoon, I witnessed the tender moments between parent and child by the lake. The babies do love to chase off the other birds, they have been taught well.
Here’s Mom grooming.
Baby watches to see how close the ducks get.
ah, the love! It was so sweet how tenderly the mother would tap the baby’s beak.
My mallard pair are hanging around too. The foot that looked broken is up and running again I am glad to report. Birds must injure themselves from time to time. I have noticed my grackle since last year who has the mis-shapen toe,
notice that wayward toe on the right.
He hops on it, gets along well and makes up for the impediment by being very much of a bully.
That grackle is a great example of ‘making do’!
The flowers are looking good, but the heat is getting to them as there has been no rain for over a week and 90+ degree temps that actually feel like over 100!
It’s so hot even the doves
have become feisty! Blue jay and dove eye to eye.
The dove was
“unflappable” Stood its’ ground.
Then it actually moved forward at the jay and they both flew off.
The heat is making our tempers short. Confrontation isn’t limited to humans – I see well executed sparring right in my own yard!
P/S, now I am in possession of a dove that got pounced on by the neighbors cat. I saw it out of the window and ran out. The poor dove was stunned and not flying. Right now it is sitting quietly inside the cat cage with food and drink, in a dark bedroom and later or in the morning I will let it loose…(When Ringo is in the house)
The poor duck in the duck box, almost every time I pass by the box going toward the lake, this duck flies out and cries all across the lake to where she plunks herself in the water and screams and screams. I feel bad that she is so paranoid and worried when she hears me. When she was gone, I made Adam look in her box, he saw three eggs, that was last week, bet they have hatched.
I try not to go in front of the box, but she knows even when I am out there walking way off behind the box. the good news, she always comes back.
So many lubber grasshoppers all over, they are eating my plants. but so what? Hey, they are hungry and I’m sure the birds find them a nice meal.
Stopped by Museum of Seminole County History on Bush Blvd. and 17/92 to drop off a couple photos for “Where The Wild Things Are”. The poster,
was designed by the The museum’s Coordinator, Kim Nelson’s talented husband, Robert E. Mier who is a wonderful wildlife painter. http://www.artnatureflorida.com
He’s a busy guy, he does a lot of art shows around the state, seems to have mastered marketing skills, a rarity for many artists like myself. I need to gather him to speak to our Gateway group, he has a lot of knowledge he could share on the business end.
The exhibit will be shown in their back building, it has a lot of items unique to our Florida history throughout both buildings.
Kim will be working her magic to coordinate her space
into a wonderful exhibit featuring many Seminole county artists. The show begins June 15th through August 14th, hours: Tuesday through Friday from 1 to 5 PM and Saturday from 9 to 1 PM –
Kim is quite an effective Coordinator and just a great person to talk with. So please come out to the Museum and not only visit the exhibit, but to walk through a huge history lesson.
Other than that, tonight is Artwalk, so gearing camera batteries up for that. Have been trying to take photos of the full moon, will be glad for that photo walk with Ken Elliott so he can teach me how to do it right by next full moon cycle! Here’s some nature pics to leave you with:
I love all this kinetic energy outside, the flashing electric, the thunder, the urgency of the rain. It has been like this for a few hours now. There is something very soothing about it, even with the tremendous boom that is going on right now as the thunder proclaims the night for itself. I did get a chance to fish as the sky was changing from the cold front. My heron came down and I caught her one small shiner. Ringo sat under my plastic chair, when he does that, it means a hard rain is coming because there are many times we fish together in the rain, but he knows the difference between big storms and these soft showers that happen as I fish. I know a storm is coming when he opts of being under the chair. And it has been a truly drenching rain. So far not too bad, the toilets still flush!
There seems to be a new “Band of Brothers” lately – I have not seen the bully brothers of the lake in the past few weeks, instead, I am seeing a group of 4, 3 mallards, one is a mallard mix and the mis is the leader. They have been coming into the yard and relaxing. Here’s the leader and the others, the lead duck has a limp, why do I get all these limping animals? Maybe my yard is just tilted?
it’s a bit smaller than the others, but if this is male or female, it is commanding the lead.
The iridescent color on the heads and small stripes on the bodys are beautiful. Wonder how long they will stick around?
Yesterday had beautiful tri-colored heron, and the baby herons were yapping it up up in the tree, but no signs of them leaving the nest.
The mother is the one on the left. They really don’t even venture far out on the branch.
I do see lots of dragonflies as it must be mating season for them.
Went to bed and woke up to clearing sky and watched the crane family come for breakfast without the baby that is the bigger one. The smaller one came and ate and of course, sat down and lazily made attempts to dig for worms. What an adorable face.
and that is what I will leave you with to start your day – have a great week!
Happy Easter – the day here in Sanford Florida has been grand. The temp. in the 80’s, the wind has been blowing gently from the east.
This morning started out with a veiled fog, but I only got the last of it and the photos did not do it justice.
The baby herons were complaining and one was waving his wings in great protest.
I have found that as soon as the mother heron leaves the area of the nest, they get quiet. The babies are getting more curious about their wings. The mother usually goes off to groom on a tree close by.
Yesterday I strolled the marina, again as in past few months, nothing in the water and few birds. I did see the usual ducks, pigeons and seagulls and one very entertaining grackle that sang beautifully for me.
Here’s a few of the ‘regulars’.
We also had a great birthday yesterday for
Adam and the cake Andrea bought was just a talking point for the “surprise crowd’ that saw it up close.
The party lasted into the wee hours of this morning, I finally dozed off at 4am. – that’s how I missed the sunrise by an hour. But I didn’t miss the beauty of the flowers giving off beauty and that’s what I will leave you with.
oh, look at the spider that looked like a decorated Easter egg.
And there was a beetle inside an azalea flower.
Had to include a grackle. And Ringo too, fishing is awful – Ringo is even bored with it. The female heron comes down and waits and watches and stays as long as we will just waiting for something to make that bobber jump. No such luck.
love Florida!
Oh it was a sad headline this morning about poor Mary. I did not renew my past Zoo membership when it expired in October, that was the last time I saw her. I worry so much for Maude who is left all alone and mourning her companion’s death. The two were bonded and it must be excruciatingly painful for Maude who must be wondering where her buddy of many years is.
This is a little tribute to Mary and Maude and some of the other animals I always find fascinating at the intimate Sanford Zoo, though I am no fan of the size of the enclosures of the big cats nor Maude and Mary. While it is an educational tool, I always felt Maude and Mary should have been given to Animal Kingdom to live out their lives. Their area is miniscule and made me always feel sad when I saw them, I hope Maude will be given the large range she deserves now, while their trainers and caretakers obviously love them, the living conditions were way too confining.
I do applaud the efforts of the Sanford Zoological Park to expand, and only want what is best for Maude. I know a committee is making a decision on how much stress is involved in this process, stress from being without a companion, more stress from moving Maude from her familiar environment and introduced to new herds. Hard decisions to make, if only Maude could tell us…
I will add more when I find my files… Here’s a few of the others
Good night, sleep tight
Busy working on my solo show at Maitland Library opening April 1st. I got tired of making a mess and decided to leave it and run up to Sanford for Fourth Fridays. Had to see how the exhibit at the Welcome Center was going.
The weather was rotten, threatening to rain and cold, but I shoved a few layers on me and a long coat and left. There was a beautifully orange sunset which looks grand through my purple tinted shades.
The downtown area was once again busy making me wonder – what recession? The German restaurant always has a line on Friday night. The Welcome Center was comfortably packed. The saxy saxophone player was indoors, I’m sure if he was outside, his instrument might get too cold.
The hung work was placed wonderfully, Nancy Irish and Kathleen Chenet are a well oiled “placement” machine. Here’s a few pics:
I love so many pictures, but those onions rock!
Ann Holstein’s still life pictures look like the work of old masters.
Click on photos for larger view. The show will be there for a month. The next one will be about architecture. You can submit your architecture work via photos until March 5th, call 407-302-2586 for further info.
Out on the street, people were briskly walking to the Gallery On First. I walked in and know I am not allowed to photograph, but if you get a chance, go take a look at Theresa Disney’s new bedspreads, they are a trip. Inside an author was signing a book about Dragons.
Over at Rhonda Richley’s gallery, she greets me like an old friend and was excited about her Art Affair Gallery moving to a larger space almost next door to her gallery now, on the corner of Palmetto and First Street. She expects to make the transition soon. Her new space will give her a lot more wall space.
Soon Rhonda’s gallery will be thriving like Jeannine Taylor. Both will have different art that really doesn’t compete with each other. I am predicting good things for Rhonda. We will watch her grow together. AND, she needs work to fill her space, artists, contact her at 407-466-6365 . Check her out at http://www.artaffairgallery.com
Walked past the Wine Bar, it was hardly occupied. But just a couple doors down, the Riverhouse Pottery was rockin’.
This is a business that teaches pottery classes, so call them if you want to throw some mean pots or cups or whatever, they can make it happen. They had beautiful stained glass, pottery, jewelry and much more.
They teach kids and adults. 407-323-9272, call them for class schedule. Sanford is trying hard to become an art center, bravo for them. AND I can’t forget Rae Marie at Framing 508 Gallery, she does so much work with Alive After 5 and all the promotions she helps with the Fourth Fridays, if you need something framed professionally, give her a call, she’s been framing and matting many years. Let her give you a price and show you what you can do with those prints laying around. Framing 508 Gallery, 407-324-1577, tell her Abbe made you call.
And that was it for me last night, went home and worked on photos and also worked on a few pictures that I took on Thursday at Lake Lily, there were plenty of muscovy ducks and ducklings all around the lake. I bet we saw a total of at least 75 babies with their mothers. It was just adorable. Here’s some nature pics to add to the conversation:
I love muscovies, so this is a small patch of land I like to look at the faces and document them
Threw in a seagull because of the color combo, loved the polka dot fringe.
Okay that’s it, have a good Saturday night.
This morning was loaded with woodpeckers, pileated and red-bellied. they were in pairs and very busy looking at existing tree holes and even trying to make home improvements on other ones.
Of course there are always the regulars
The cats wonder if Godzilla crane will be setting foot onto the porch to trample them…
Ringo dreams about fishing…
Grackles look out for Ringo, the squirrels find safety in numbers
This little “rocky” says, “Bring it on Ringo”
And of course tonight the rain was coming in and the ibis looked beautiful in the tree. They were so white against the dark blue sky, whereas on Saturday they just looked beautiful flying against the cloudy sky.
The grackles and blackbirds are always waiting for food.
At around 4-5pm, the heron comes down to fish with Ringo and me. and all is fine until the jealous crane comes and chases the heron off. Even Ringo steers clear of the mean crane.
On Sunday as Lee fished, the crane chased the heron off to the island, the crane thinks he’s the boss of everyone.
The heron hurries away, but waits for the crane to fly off and comes back. Tonight a storm came in and I had to quit fishing,
tomorrow the heron and crane will be back as will the woodpeckers, birds and squirrels and we will start all over again…(gladly)
The best pastels are natures. I take the photos and try and do mather nature justice. Sometimes I leave them natural and sometimes give them a little ‘boost’. Either way, I am so lucky to have this option of time and sight to take it all in and appreciate it and then pass it on to those who don’t get the time. There is beauty in everything, even chaos ask Ringo!
The fishing tonight was nothing, not even a nibble except for one turtle who came by looking for a hand out. You know what they say about elephants never forgetting? Well neither do the turtles. They look at you with disdain that says they will go after your bait UNLESS you throw them some bread. So, sucker that I am, they do get a treat.
How do you resist these angry stares?
The sky tonight was interesting, had twists and twirls and weird, ziggy lines from con trails.
Here’s what it looked like over the lake around 5pm and then as it progressed. The temperature was in the upper 50’s – still needed all my layers of padding to stay warm, if I fell down I would bounce, (unless I fell in the lake and would surely drown, or more likely be totally humiliated as it is knee deep by the shore line.)
Ringo gave a nice profile shot for me, then sat down and watched the day undress.
Ringo came home last night with a bruise on his chin, I bet he was fighting with that black stray cat we see often. Ringo rather looks like he has a goatee on his chin, kind of a “beat” and hip, Kerouac cat. In fact at night, I have to read him from chapters of archy and mehitabel before he goes to bed, he snickers as only cats can, silently.
Tonight as I pet his soft head, I asked him why he always has to get into scraps, why he must lie in the street, why he had to kill birds and play with snakes? He told me to refer to page 107, Of archy and mehitabel,
the lesson of the moth
i was talking to a moth
the other evening
he was trying to break into
an electric light bulb
and fry himself on the wires
why do you fellows
pull this stunt i asked him
because it is the conventional
things for moths or why
if that had been an uncovered
candle instead of an electric
light bulb you would
now be a small unsightly cinder
have you no sense
plenty of it he answered
but at times we get tired
of using it
we get bored with routine
and crave beauty
and excitement
fire is beautiful
and we know that if we get
too close it will kill us
but what does it matter
it is better to be happy
for the moment
and be burned up with beauty
then to live a long time
and be bored all the while…
I hate to admit it, but Ringo is such a ‘cat’-e-gorically feline progressive thinker…
”
First thing that struck me on my way to Sanford Party-Gras were the robins! One street over there were many robins in the road, funny how they can’t go one more block to my house so I can get some good photos. I rolled down the window just to show my “northern peeps” that their birds came down here to stay warm, well, I suppose they can call 50 degrees warm, not me, I’m headed out with 2 pairs of socks and 2 shirts under a turtle neck and long coat.
I parked the truck and looked at the sky as it was supposed to rain.
but it was a thick, wooly ceiling up there. The first store I came across was G’ma Bobbie, on the corner or Magnolia and 3rd St. It was always a fun store to get used frames in and the new owner, Barry was busy giving it fresh touches.
They have a lot of furniture and knick/knacks. Barry also has an adorable cat that needs a home, she was a beauty, but as you know I have 3 myself.
Here’s that adorable face.
And she was so very soft.
Walked down Magnolia toward First street. Passed Wayne Densch Theatre, a new Yoga studio and Stones Throw Bistro, and a photography studio.
Passing Maya’s Bookstore, and out into the street looking at the small, early crowd.
This couple was festive.
They had a band playing. And people dancing.
Wow, Mardi Gras is so colorful!
Stopped by Rhonda’s, Art Affair Gallery 303 East first and had to visit her exciting store and see what new looks were hanging around. She had a lot! And she will be moving to a larger place right on the same corner which means she’s digging her heels in and will be showcasing a lot more art and local artists. Thanks Rhona Richley! Here’s a glimpse of things at Art Affair Gallery.
Plus there is cool jewelry too.
In front of the Gallery was Gabrielle Shafer showing antique jewelry creations, called
Enchanted Antiquities. Her set up was very creative, her unique hand made jewelry is all specially selected from older pieces. She incorporates the old and new together and ‘viola’ beautiful jewelry, wish I had gone back to get a close up. Hope she did well.
Next to Art Affair Gallery is Soap Sanctuary & Gift shop, a wonderful place full of body delights. Loved her business card.
Went across the street to The Welcome Center, encountered a very festive woman who was a volunteer there. (What do the volunteers drink before volunteering? hahaha) Up on the walls is the artwork from last time I was down here. (one of mine is still there)
There were some costumes on the floor, but didn’t see any naked folks running around.
Back out on the streets and looked at many artists, ceramics, woodworkers, jewelry, jewelry and more jewelry.
Always enjoy the worldwide imported selection of furniture and gifts at Washburns.
Bailey’s Upscale Resale had lots of great buys, big bargains there.
Always like to support fellow photographers, this was G. K Sharman blog at http://gkspix.wordpress.com. Also enjoyed the ‘chair art by Julia S. Owens, check her out at http://juliaowens.net Below is LUNCHBOX by Craig Beverly.
Enjoyed Beverly’s t-shirts and the price was right! http://myspace.com/lunchbox74 – Rhonda, if you read this, put some of Craig’s shirts in your shop, (Craig also had terrific art, hint hint…)
Maya’s is one of the best books stores around here! And go upstairs and see Kim at her store, Fringe,
she has a lot of vintage clothing and accessories.
Then moved on,
As the sun set, the cold was waiting to pounce. As I drove away, I could hear the music from the biker bar.
And that was a bit of a tour around Sanford’s Party Gras and I didn’t even mention that most people go there to eat really cheap and really good food. It’s all over the streets with vendors from local eateries participating. I didn’t eat or drink, but there is wine everywhere too. I did stop at Panera for soup to go. YUM!
And when I got home, Ringo was in the corner having a dream, I think it was all the vaccines he had impaled upon him at his yearly exam. Can you believe that I could have had all kinds of ala carte services for his “wellness” today costing a total of $396! I opted for the basics at $112.
Maybe it was something spooky because as Ringo was dreaming, Quentin Tarantino appeared on tv looking directly at Ringo and shielding his eyes in his voyeuristic way.
What a strange way to end a party-gras blog, throw in a celebrity and a dreaming cat, hey, why not….

First things first, before going to the reception I spent time out in the back watching ‘heron wars’. Two males vying for the affection of the nesting female. One had his way with her.
While the other waited in line for servicing. But the male who had been first in line chased the other suitor off
– they went in circles till the other male went back to his own nest, and the alpha male came back toward the nest and sat watching for the other male to hone in. I suppose we will have some eggs in that nest soon. It’s fun living in between rookeries.
Then it was over to Sanford, Taking pictures on the run. At the Welcome Center there was wonderful art. I saw other artists I knew, met some I didn’t know, and talked to others who were there supporting the arts like Beda, Pam and Chuck and Bev who came to support the cause. The Welcome Center was packed.
The Zoo had brought over animals, a possum – (I see possums nightly – though they are not on a leash)
And the coolest owl.
I could have taken picture after picture of his gorgeous face and eyes! After wandering the room, Adam and I went out to walk the street, (not in a soliciting kind of way,) and came to a newer art gallery store, Called Art AffairGallery.
They have amazing art and gifts. Julie Kessler is one of their featured artists known for her mosaics and metal work. She does not fail to amaze with the work she does.
Ronda Richley is the owner and has great taste for stocking her store, she was very enthusiastic about making her Gallery a staple in Sanford that people will be drawn to, go visit and have a look, at 303 East First Street next to Fawn, she really has the passion to make it grow.
We went up to Jeanine Taylors which is always filled with talent beyond talent.
Hollenbachs the German Restaurant was packed with people waiting in line. I like their desserts, but I’m not into their regular meals, but who am I? They had plenty of people waiting to eat. Otherwise, the Stones Throw Bistro which is new has a nice menu and was busy. Maya was closing her bookshop and came over to the Welcome Center.
There was a jazz singer by the door of the Welcome Center who was singing and playing with a lot of heart, it really lent itself to the artsy mood.
Talked to my friends again, listened to which artist won the first prize for being the voted for piece of artwork, – (not mine) – but the winner, Heather had sculpted two pieces, a dog and cat out of clay and she deserved the prize.
All in all it was fun, and I was so happy Pam came after working all day, and it made me happy that Beda and her adorable neighbor, and Bev, Chuck and Pam came out to share in all the festivities. I wish I had gotten a photo with Pam and Bev, but did get one with Beda, And had Chuck take a photo of Adam and I and I look like a mad, serial killer. So I plastered on a smile with photoshop: poorly I might add
Then it was back home so Adam could do his thing and I could do mine, (getting on the computer to give a blog report.)
So when you have a moment, get to downtown Sanford and have a look at the mentioned places, and also over at the vintage boutique, Fringe which has moved above Maya’s bookstore, Kim the owner is a lot of fun as are the clothes, you can even rent clothes from there.
Gotta pack and get over to Tampa tomorrow, ahhhhhh, the I-4 anxiety —
Florida’s flora and fauna have become victims of the new deadzone.
We have frozen, and refrozen and will do it again for a few more nights. Can the plants survive all this savage winter frost over and over? Even the wildlife is at risk, the manatees are taking over anywhere the water is warmer, they succumb to “cold stress syndrome”, (me too.) They can’t take water below 68degrees or they can die because apparently their hormonal system is stressed. Photo care of
Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institution
And not only are the manatees at risk, the non native iguanas are just falling out of trees onto people in south Florida. Apparently, being of a reptile nature, they just go into a cold induced stupor and fall over. Plus, they are saving sea turtles from dying, and pelicans from starving and there’s 4 people in need of every one homeless shelter cot on these freezing nights. It is a winter that I have not encountered since living in Florida back in ’73’ (though we did move away for a few years in the 80’s) This is not the Florida I love, give me back the heat, I would rather be hot than cold!
The backyard looks burnt out. This is from Wednesday morning. Here’s a few more of various plants around the yard:
That’s my passionflower vine all dying a slow death.
my hibiscus and young bird of paradise, kiss them goodbye – they are goners.
The view from my desk window, canna lilies are totally brown!
| The cranes are fine and I am happy to report the Papa crane is walking much better, his limp is decreasing. (stock footage from the summer.) The birds are very active.
Even the squirrels were trespassing
around the yard knowing Ringo was inside playing.
The fox was around, he’s looking a bit better, and was off in a split second as soon as I opened the sliding glass door to get a photo of him. He sprints around here, then in a minute, he is off through the neighborhood.
The female heron sits around in her less than egg-worthy nest and waits for her lover to appear twice a day. I think he is disappointed in the nest and spends more time with the other female heron at her pad because it is a better home environment.
Fishing you ask? I have not fished in over a week, the cold is way too cold for me, as I guess it would be for the fish, who are most likely hardly moving. The lake looks great, you can see beneath the water quite clearly. I did see minnows, but nothing bigger. I remember a few years ago watching bass swim around in specific areas, they seemed territorial. But fishing has not been that great in the past year and a half, when my neighbors moved, the big bass have decided not to be caught anymore.
And back to the weather, I never thought I would say a 50 degree day would be a heatwave! There might be snow in the morning, how freaky would that be?
So now it is morning, 8:41am to be exact, it has rained, but it is not quite cold enough yet for snow. It looks once again boring and cold, brown and lifeless except for the fluttering of birds at my stump and feeders – DO NOT FORGET TO FEED THE BIRDS THIS WINTER! You will be greatly rewarded by having so much activity around on these days when you feel so sluggish under several layers of clothing and a full length robe. Here’s the latest view : And I just came in from being outside and it has cooled down a lot! Temp is at 35, maybe in an hour you will see snow, I will be watching, it’s gonna happen!
I did write a story about “fish cubes” — we had a frost in 2008 and I had a dream that the fish were all frozen in the lake and I boated out and rescued them, it’s on my poetry blog – Go to http://abberantverse.wordpress.com if you feel like reading my surreal view of poetry/prose, I have a strange take on things.
Will keep you posted “literally” when the snow comes – stay warm wherever you are, and gear up for making our utility companies rich via monstrous electric and gas bills! Now if America could only ‘green up’ and have a huge manufacturing industry of turbines and solar with the ability to sell our excess energy back! Energy should be propelling a massive industry for us, where is it? I suppose all one can do to protest for now is to expel excessive energy and fart on the check to the electric & gas companies before sealing the bill in the envelope, maybe they will get ‘wind’ of our need for change…
City Hall at Lake Mary has always wrapped their trees and it is a wonderful look. Tonight I went up there and walked around. Kids with their parents were in awe and they really personified the holiday spirit. I took a few pictures of course, here’s the Abbesworld view:
Happy Holidays from the Arenson/Eshack family! From all our animals, (though my cats won’t stand still enough for a costumed photo.)
The cranes had been sunning themselves right out my window.
The seemed so happy and peaceful taking in the warmth on this 50+ degree afternoon.
The female sat and contentedly groomed, and I forget that they have white eyelids, and they close going up, versus ours that close down.
When suddenly the cranes took off. and I looked and the fox was out there. He took off after them and I didn’t see him. Then I looked out the back, and there he was standing on my stump eating bird seed. He looked starved and mange-y.
He looked at me through slits and then jumped down and ran away. I called animal services, told them the situation, and they said if he was eating he was okay. I beg to differ, does this look okay?
He looks kind of creepy, hope it is not rabid.
I will have to watch when I take little Bella outside. Don’t want the fox to think she is a Taco Bell special. Yesterday my neighbor called when she saw the fox, I went out and caught a photo of him crossing the street. Poor thing looks so lost.
The ibis are out in pairs again, the heron has left it’s nest, I’m sure it went fishing. A cute moth was on the wild little daisies.
Later I should have some photos on http://offshoot2.wordpress.com
Until then, I am going to take a nap and then do X-mas cards. Catch ya later….
PS – I will call animal services tomorrow, request a trap, and will send them a photo…
I had to pick up Hendrix today from 55 West downtown where he had hung in a model rental, and it rented so Jimi had no further service. Anyone need a Hendrix photo? And since I had to go downtown, I decided I would make a few stops along the way, one was at Borders in Winter Park where the Animal Welfare Alliance was wrapping holiday gifts for donations, I was eager to help and dropped off wrapping paper and bows. Gail Nagan is trying hard to get her dream of the low cost spay and neuter clinic realized and she is making all efforts to fund it, so if you need something wrapped or would like to volunteer to gift wrap, please call her, (407-462-2320 ) — she would love the help.
But of course, I am out of sequence, first I stopped off in Casselberry.
Went to Casselberry Art House and WOW, I was not prepared for how it has morphed since last time I visited! They have revamped the whole space around it into a absolutely ‘bucolic’ – peacful space! The street Melody has been sealed off so you must turn on Triplet. The Art House itself remains the same in it’s arty-ambiance. Linda, the Recreation Coordinator was getting it ready for an art exhibit. It looked interesting. I didn’t take photos on the inside only because I was not sure how their artists would react. But, here’s photos of the new outside.
Look at all the crows! And my favorite spot, the wonderful fountain!
The jets go in several sequences and you could take a lap top and sit and reel off that novel you have been wanting to write, but your brain is in blocked mode. Or read a book — this setting over looking the lake and the wonderful boardwalk will help relax you! This really added to their city hall. They have concerts and art shows, go to their website, the Art House offers art lessons and other types of classes too. They have a seniors group that also meets, call 407-262-7700
for more info or go to their site, www.casselberry.org or cut and paste

It was after that , that I went to Borders and I also got an assiago pretzel, not that great.
Then I figured I would stop to see what was new at the Comma, Karen had sent out notices about her latest exhibit, “4 The Birds” – I missed the reception, they even had live birds from the Orange County Audubon Society! When I parked, there was a window with ‘day of the dead’ figures.
I walked in the back door of Comma and felt like I always do, that I am in a first class art gallery! And Karen comes out and always greets ‘silly old me’ as if I am a paying customer. She has always been a great teacher about the people and techniques and pieces she has on the walls and on display. She told me I had to photograph the t-shirt I was wearing and call it “Something”, so here’s my shirt – Yep, that shirt is a trick, a ploy to divert the eyes and keep them focused upwards and not at my chubby Jewish thighs! The shirt as you notice has two tigers in strategic placement. It is a shirt you see coming at you.
But I always wear shirts with something visual, many times with something to read, like Dr. Suess –
but that’s another blog and neurosis folded in my t-shirt drawer!
And here’s a tour of Comma Art Gallery:
The glasswork by Duncan McClellan, his color and usage of design were truly beautiful. Love the swans. My favorite was a collage and stitched piece of a women and a crow.
There is always unique jewelry and the same with the artwork.
Grady Kimsey is totally awesome. Karen’s painting is always fresh and inspiring.
She’s very diverse!
Patrick McGrath Muniz has an astounding icon view of art, it’s ironic and totally eye consuming, you really have to look at the detailing of his art. You must venture down to 813 Virginia Dr. and see the art work.
Hey, I can’t show everything, I want you to go have a look. And if you are an artist, there is gallery space available, e-mail Karen at commagallery@gmail.com She runs an internationally known gallery and will be glad to fill you in. http://www.commagallery.com
I enjoyed my visit there, but knew Jimi was waiting. I bid Karen ‘adieu’ and moved on to Orange Avenue. I hate driving the one way, narrow streets of downtown. I parked and walked several blocks to new 55 West condos that did not sell as condos, but as rentals, they rent out briskly. I walked in and asked for Jimi Hendrix, the ‘concierge’ guy seemed rather uppity! Hey desk guy, get over yourself, in the dictionary your job title is only a fancy French name for a front desk watcher/janitor.
Jimi and I marched back with 9 minutes left on the parking meter. I played “the Wind Cries Mary” and “Little Wing”, (my song to myself) over and over as we traveled down Rosilyn onto the east I-4 ramp and off we cruised to our Sanford exit.
I didn’t go right home, there was that one stop at Giovannis for eggplant parmigiana, (Pam, I just couldn’t wait for a visit to Brio.) Jimi waited politely in the car.
Giovannis’ garlic rolls are the best, I love Italian food and pasta, (too much) it all fits in with the strategy of wearing flashy, eye grabbing, catchy t-shirts. I bet Finola Hughes would grab me off the street for a fashion makeover, Heidi Klum would recoil in horror looking at my wardrobe choices, while Wendy Williams might burn my shirts with her lighter as she does with beef jerky— Please, don’t tell any of them where I live…
Forgot to shout out a Happy Hanukah to the other tribe members.
Made my way back from Tampa, weather was very gray and cold until today. I had a great time though. I miss Sasha, and little Bella,
and the kids. We checked the market over there, wow, great home buying opportunities! Maybe for me???
These are some of the photos I took.
Aaron’s 250 gallon tank only has 3 fish at this time, the big puffer, lion fish and small clown. The salt water tank is hard to maintain, he might sell the fish and go fresh water, he loves oscar and pacu fish.
The weather as I mentioned was weird, a cold front came through and the winds coming from the northeast off the lake were intense and felt so cold. The sky was mostly dull the whole time until today.
It was gray and dreary. When I left this morning, it was sunny and warm again. I only got off at 4 stops on the way back, traffic was not even that bad.
I stopped at lakeland to get some fries and found a little bookstore called Mary’s. It even had women’s hats. On the way back, it’s always good to see the outline of downtown.
I had to stop on Washington St. at RT Art and pick up my photos that were made.
you notice I made them bigger than the others, that’s marketing. As always, Roger and Trish do terrific work, and their dogs are adorable and posed for me too.
They were awesome subjects!
Finally I got home and the sky became totally overcast. I did fish with the heron female on the nest, she flew down and got a few treats. The cranes did a dance, they seemed glad to have me back. I’m back in the cave, now to get working on my spring crow exhibition and also send a few pics over for the Gateway next month.
Of course I will let you know the dates.
And that’s it — oh wait, the other night, TCM, Turner Classic Movies had a wonderful “short” where dogs starred in all the actor rolls, it was very funny.
And I have no idea what this has to do with anything, just thought I’d let ya go with a smile, (or a growl) …ARF ARF
