Sandra Wilson is an artist who had a huge vision; a place where artists could come and display their work. Where artists could teach their craft from, where a chorus or band or a play could take place, where photographers could meet and mixed media could mingle with the locals from Orlando to Daytona Beach and parts in between and would be easy to find. Well here it is! The Gateway Center for the Arts.
Wilson and her dedicated volunteers and members of the Debary Art League spent ten years with countless projects to raise the money as she also wrote grants and on January 31, between 10am and 4pm will be the grand opening of Gateway Center For the Arts, a vision accomplished!
And it’s pretty impressive too! On a prime piece of ground at the intersection of Saxon Blvd and 17/92 in Debary, this beautiful building has a lot to do. It has already been a hotbed for budding artists, young and old coming for lessons. There is a childrens’ room designed for the convenience of keeping little ones contained and for teaching budding artists.  There will be a kiln room and a functioning kitchen soon.  Behind the building is a wonderful playground too.

They have had a ballet set to perform after Grand opening and the Gateway Orchestra has already given a Holiday performance. A local church will be holding meetings there some time after the Grand opening. The Gateway is  now getting ready to fill the walls with members art. Sandra is not the kind who pats herself on the back either, but I will. She has done an amazing job of coordinating her dream and watching it come to fruition.
I can already envision the juried art shows taking place on the spacious wrap around porch with it’s 12 foot over hang. From the gallery, to the auditorium, to a gift shop and the many rooms that will be filled with exciting people, this place rocks! I am looking forward to the venues that will come inside and out. Sandra says the Gallery has already been booked through 2009, hey, “build it and they will come”, and they are!  Go to the Grand opening January 31st  and see for yourself.  We are very fortunate to have people who follow through with a mission that grips their soul, Sandra Wilson and the Debary Art League are to be commended….
